“The sign is greater than the concept it represents. The symbol stands for something greater than its obvious meaning.” (paraphrased from “Man and His symbols by Carl Jung.)
This is something that is interesting to think about. Many people put so much expectation on signs. Looking for signs to begin something or to take the next step. People look at signs to make sure that they are on the right path and yes there is some truth to that. However, there is also so much more to realize beyond that.
The signs that are seen are simply confirmation that your conscious mind is shown from something that is known within. Not only that but most if not all symbols are simply confirmation that you are in alignment with what you want. The signs are the way that the universe speaks and communicates with you.
These signs can come in many shapes and forms. From a small bee flying in your path, a feather on the ground in a strange place, a repeating number or something as big as a you can think that is important for you.
Symbols are used in many cultures and by many people for many different things. From religious meanings to something personal. From being used in a business to something cultural. It all depends on how it is perceived by the one seeing them. For example, a symbol in one place can represent something different in another place. But, what is important to realize is that even a small symbol has a meaning or interpretation that is bigger than what is shown or seen.
For example, the infinity symbol has different meanings based on the context surrounding it. Mathematically is represents a number with no limits. Spiritually it carries a meaning of cycles (death and rebirth), duality or balance and even interconnection. For some it can even represent the ever flowing emotions and energy that is present in the universe.
Symbols and signs are only important as how they are connected to the individual that sees them. It is also important when noticing them to ask why you may be seeing these signs and symbols. To look deeper within and ask yourself how they may be important for you. There should also be an understanding that not everything should be taken as a sign or symbol for yourself personally. In some cases, they are not meant to be taken that way. While there are no true coincidences (at least in my opinion), if you are constantly looking for signs and symbolism everywhere you look or go then your mind while find them. Now is that truly a sign or are you simply so dependent on finding them to lead you on your path or to take your next step that you are always noticing them and yet still confused?
In the book this quote is from, it was talking about dream interpretation and determining how it changes depending on the individual and their own beliefs or experiences. Which it is important to remember that everyone has different experiences and are at different places in life. So a symbol or sign for one person will have a different or deeper meaning than it will for another.
